There
were just five new entries, eight climbers, twenty five
songs going down and two non movers. As expected
Helping Haiti made its debut at the top with 'Everybody
Hurts' and we could well see its American counterpart (a
new recording of 'We Are The Word') high in the charts
next week. After two days the single had sold 205k but
only finished the week on 453k. This was less than
both Joe McElderry and Rage Against The Machine managed in
their Christmas chart battle and claims that the single
will be the biggest seller in ten years are starting to
look ambitious.

It's
a massive lead to take into this week but the Brits effect could
cause some chart surprises next Sunday.
The
success of that charity single pushed 'Fireflies' by Owl City into
second spot whie Timbaland featuring Katy Perry was a non mover at
no.3 with 'If We Ever Meet Again'. Alicia Keys edged up another
place to no.4 with 'Empire State Of Mind Part II' and the Glee
Cast fell one to no.5 with 'Don't Stop Believin''. 3OH!3 featuring
Katy Perry went back up one to no.6 with 'Starstrukk' and JLS also
climbed again with 'One Shot' up one at no.7. Iyaz went down two
to no.8 with 'Replay' while the Glee Cast appeared again at no.9
with a new entry for 'Halo / Walking On Sunshine'. Rihanna rounded
off the top ten as 'Rude Boy' climbed ten places to no.10.
One
climber and one new entry remained in the top twenty. Jay Sean
featuring Sean Paul & Lil Jon went up one to no.13 with 'Do
You Remember' and the Glee Cast got their third new entry as 'It's
My Life / Confessions Part II' went straight in at no.14.
There
were two new entries and three climbers in the lower half of the
chart. Cheryl Cole got her third solo hit as 'Parachute' entered
at no.26 while Calvin Harris went up eleven to no.27 with 'You
Used To Hold Me'. Young Money featuring Lloyd continued their
steady climb as 'Bedrock' advanced six to no.28 and Pixie Lott
returned to the top thirty once again as 'Cry Me Out' went back up
two to no.30. Finally there was a new entry at no.38 for DJ Zinc
featuring Ms Dynamite with 'Wile Out'.
Uffie
is a truly international talent. She was born in America, raised
in Hong Kong and is now based in Paris. She is signed to Ed Banger
records and this week sees the release of her new single 'MC's Can
Kiss'. The single is her sixth release to date and
is available on 12" vinyl. It's taken from her
forthcoming debut album 'Sex Dreams And Denim Jeans'. Her debut
release was 'Pop The Glock' in 2006 and despite four releases
since then she has yet to make the chart. She has collaborated
with a number of other artists including Justice, Crystal Castles
and Mr.Oizo. Remixes featured on the vinyl edition include the
Clean Radio Version, the Starkey Redid and the Zombie Disco Squad
Remix / Dub.
Lemar
is back from a brief absence with his new single 'Way Love Goes'.
It's taken from his forthcoming greatest hits album which is
pencilled in for a March release. He has enjoyed several top ten
hits since coming to prominence on the 2002 series of Fame Academy
where he has long outlasted the eventual winner David Sneddon. He
has released four studio albums although his last one 'The Reason'
performed disappointingly and missed the top forty alltogether.
Perhaps then his greatest hits is a timely reminder to just what a
talent he is, and recaps on what a fine series of singles he has
released including my favourite 'If There's Any Justice' which
made the top three back in 2004. Hopefully this will return him to
the top forty once more.
'This
Addiction' is the new single from Alkaline Trio and it is released
on a limited edition 7" vinyl format. The band released their
first single 'Sundials' back in 1997 but did not make the top
forty until 2005 when their 'Crimson' album was responsible for
all three of their top forty hits. This latest single is the title
track from their seventh studio album which is due for
release next week. The band currently consist of Matt Skiba, Dan
Andriano and Derek Grant although they have been through some line
up changes over the years with Grant being their third drummer
following the departure of original drummer Glen Porter and
subsequent drummer Mike Felumlee. Likewise Andriano
assumed bass duties from Rob Doran who left back in 1997.
Irish
rockers Ash release the latest single in their acclaimed A-Z
series this week. They have yet to crack the top 100 with
third single 'Arcadia' coming closest peaking at no.114. To date
they have achieved eighteen top forty hits with their last being
2007's 'Polaris'. They have been in existence since 1992 although
really came to prominence in 1996 when their '1977' album spawned
four top twenty singles including 'Goldfinger' which remains their
only top five hit to date. Subscribers to their A to Z series are
also party to receiving additional bonus tracks including the
recent addition 'Gallows Hill' which would have formed a decent A
side. The band have a new UK tour set for the Spring and
hopefully their continued hard work will result in them having a
hit single or two during this year.
Highly
rated indie seven piece Los Campesinos have just released their
third studio album 'Romance Is Boring' and this week sees them put
out the title track as a single. It's the follow up to 'There Are
Listed Buildings' which was released last November and it comes
available on a 7" vinyl format backed with the new track
'Too Many Flesh Suppers'. The band formed at Cardiff University
back in 2006 although none of the members are of Welsh origin. The
band have yet to enjoy much in the way of single success with
their non album release 'The International Tweexcore Underground'
performing the best, peaking at no.126 back in 2007. Many fans
will already have this track on the album and so its hard to see
enough of them buying this to make it become their debut top forty
hit.
Manchester
Indie band The Courteeners are back this week with their new
single 'You Overdid It Doll'. It is available on CD and two
7" formats with the CD containing 'I Never Wanted To' as the
bonus track while the vinyl editions feature 'Whites Of Her Eyes'
and 'Social Fireworks' alongside a live version of the main track.
Their debut album 'St Jude' saw them enjoy their first three top
forty hits followed by 'That Kiss' which has yet to feature on any
album. This is the first proper single from their new album
'Falcon' although 'Cross My Heart & Hope To Fly' was released
as a free download from the bands website. They have received a
great deal of critical acclaim including specific praise from
Morrissey who invited the band to support him on his 'Years Of
Refusal' tour. Should be a top twenty hit for them.
Timbaland
has to be one of the most prolific producers / recording artists
around. This week sees the release of his latest
collaboration 'If We Ever Meet Again' which features Katy Perry on
guest vocals. His last single 'Morning After Dark' featured Nelly
Furtado and SoShy and peaked at no.6 though he has reached the top
spot three times in his career. It's been over ten years since his
first credited appearance when he guested on Destiny's Child's top
twenty hit 'Get On The Bus'. Katy Perry of course needs no
introduction and has recently enjoyed top three success on her
3OH!3 collaboration 'Starstrukk'. Her high profile
relationship with comedian Russell Brand guarantees her plenty of
tabloid column inches and on this showing she can look forward to
another top five sucess next weekend.
'Remember
December' is the latest single release from the American teenage
singer / actress Demi Lovato. She first rose to prominence in the
Disney film 'Camp Rock' and recently has been working hard on
the sequel 'Camp Rock 2 : The Final Jam'. Despite being such
a massive star in America she has yet to fully register in the UK
and so far has just one top forty hit to her name which was 'La La
Land'. That only got as far as no.35 and was taken
from her debut album 'Don't Forget'. She has just released
her second album 'Here We Go Again' and in the US this has been
the second single to be taken from it with the title track already
having making the top twenty. The single is
released on a CD format and it looks as though it will do
enough to give her a second top forty hit in the UK.
'Blame
It On The Girls' is the latest release from pop extrovert Mika. He
has achieved five top ten hits including 'Grace Kelly' which saw
him hit the top spot and gain a nomination for the 2007 Record Of
The Year. He won the Best British Breakthrough Act at the 2008
Brit Awards and was nominated for the Best British Male at this
years awards. His debut album 'Life In Cartoon Motion' made the
top spot but last years follow up 'The Boy Who Knew To Much'
stalled at no.4 as did the opening single 'We Are Golden'.
His last outing 'Rain' dropped short of a top forty appearance so
he will be hoping for better luck with this single. Curiously the
song uses very few musical instruments with the main beat being
derived from Mika hitting his desk, clapping his hands and
stamping his feet. It's a great feel good track which I hope will
secure him a top forty return.
Also
released this week are 'Velvet' by The Big Pink, 'Under
Pressure (Ice Ice Baby) by Jedward featuring Vanilla Ice and 'Ich
Tu Dir Weh' by Rammstein. Download only releases include 'Two
By Two' by Animal Kingdom, 'Rain' by Creed, 'Wings' by Das Pop, 'Lovefool'
by Distant Soundz featuring Rozalla, 'Thumper' by Enter Shikari,
'You Got The Dirtee Love' by Florence & The Machine featuring
Dizzee Rascal, 'Vlad The Impaler' by Kasabian, 'All This Time
(Pick-Me-Up Song)' by Maria Mena, 'The Sound Above My Hair'
by Scooter, 'Written In Reverse' by Spoon, 'Could You Be The One'
by Stereophonics, 'We've Always Been Your Friends' by Sunshine
Underground, 'Cecilia' by Thomas Dybdahl, 'Please' by Tom McRae,
There Goes My Baby' by Usher and 'I Feel The Need' by Violet
Bones.
So
it has to be Helping Haiti at the top for a second week but watch
out for a few songs going back up the chart after performances at
this weeks Brit Awards at Earls Court The event is live on
ITV and is bound to have a big audience. Don't forget to stop by
next week when artists releasing new singles look set to include
30 Seconds To Mars, Alicia Keys, JLS and Sugababes. Until
then have yourself a good week.
