There
were seven new entries, six climbers, twenty four songs
going down and three non movers on this weeks chart.
Iyaz held on at the top with 'Replay', though in doing so
he had to withstand a strong challenge from
Owl
City
who entered at no.2 with 'Fireflies'.

Sidney
Samson featuring Wizard Sleeve fell one to no.3 with '
Riverside
(Let's Go)' while 3OH!3 featuring Katy Perry also went down a
place to no.4 with 'Starstrukk'. The Glee Cast got a new entry at
no.5 with their cover of 'Don't Stop Believin'' while Journey's
original version was a non mover at no.6. Lady Gaga went down
three to no.7 with 'Bad Romance' and Florence & The Machine
also fell three to no.8 with 'You've Got The Love'. Plan B got a
new entry at no.9 with 'Stay Too Long' and proceedings were
rounded off by Alexandra Burke who climbed two places to no.10
with 'Broken Heels'.
There
were a further three climbers in what remained of the top twenty.
Justin Bieber climbed three to no.11 with 'One Time' while Jay-Z
featuring Mr Hudson went up six places to no.13 with 'Forever
Young'. The final cllimber went to N-Dubz featuring Mr Hudson who
went up a further place to no.15 with 'Playing With Fire'.
There
were four new entries and two climbers in the lower half of the
chart. Alicia Keys was the weeks highest climber as 'Empire
State Of Mind Part II' went up twelve to no.23 while OneRepublic
got a new entry at no.30 with 'All The Right Moves'. JLS got a new
entry at no.32 with 'One Shot' and 30 Seconds To Mars went back up
four to no.36 with 'Kings & Queens'. Biffy Clyro got a new
entry at no.38 with 'Many Of Horror' while Vampire Weekend entered
at no.39 with 'Cousins'.
The
Glee phenomenon saw a further four tracks from the show inside the
top 75. 'Take A Bow' was to be found at no.43, 'Gold Digger' was
at no.49, 'Rehab' was at no.62 and 'On My Own' was at no.73.
Last week was only the shows first airing so we could see further
covers hit the charts in the coming weeks. Other tracks of
note were 'Paper Planes' by M.I.A. which re-entered at no.61
following the showing of 'Slumdog Millionaire' on terrestrial TV
last week and 'Poker Face' by Lady Gaga which celebrated a whole
year of chart action by falling seventeen places to no.56.
'Many
Of Horror (When We Collide)' is the new single by Scottish
rockers Biffy Clyro and is released on a CD and two 7" vinyl
formats. The CD comes backed with 'Toottoottoot' while the vinyl
editions feature the new tracks 'Creative Burns' and 'Lonely
Revolutions'. All tracks feature on the digital download bundle
version. To date they have notched up twelve top forty hits with
only 'Mountains' and last years 'Golden Rule' going on to make the
top ten. This the fourth single to be taken from their current
studio album 'Only Revolutions' which made the top ten last year
and was certified Gold with sales of 100k despite initially
peaking at just no.8. They do however have a strong fanbase and
with it already inside the top forty on download sales it looks
set to be top thirty next week.
'Echo'
is the second single from Girls Can't Catch and is a drastic
improvement on their debut single 'Keep Your Head Up' which
dropped short of the top twenty. They supported Girls Aloud on
their Out Of Control tour and are currently playing live with the
Jonas Brothers on their
UK
dates. The band consist of Phoebe Brown (who fronted Hope on X
Factor), Jess Stickley (who came to the attention of the
management via a Motorokr competition) and Daizy Agnew who
features on MTV's Urban Base and who sang the original version of
Jade Ewen's Eurovision Song Contest entry 'My Time'. They
desperately need this to be a hit, but with Girls Aloud and The
Saturdays leading the way there may not be enough of an appetite
for another girl band on the block.
'Could
This Be Real' is released this week by dance act Sub
Focus and it is available to purchase on both CD and 12"
formats. Sub Focus is a pseudonym for English drum and bass
producer Nick Douwma who has been releasing records for almost
seven years now. The single is lifted from his current album which
was released in October of last year. This week sees Douwma making
appearances in
Bath
, Nottingham,
London
and
Liege
while next week he is booked to appear in
St Petersburg
in
Russia
. To date he has achieved just one top forty hit which came last
year in the shape of 'Rock It / Follow The Light'. The single
topped the dance charts and made it onto the B playlist at Radio
One. Watch out for this inside the lower reaches of the
chart next Sunday afternoon.
'Space
Shot' is the latest single from Ash and has been given
more promotion than some of its predecessors on the A-Z singles
series. To date the series has featured 'True Love 1980' (#148),
'Joy Kicks Darkness' (#171),
Arcadia
(#114), 'Tracers' (#140), 'The Dead Disciples' (#139), 'Pripyat'
and 'Ichiban'. While each single is guaranteed 1,000 sales from
those fans that have signed up to the subscription for the 7"
formats of each release the download sales have been very
disappointing. The band already have 44 songs in the locker to
cover the 26 single releases, but are also due to undertake
another studio session later this month which may see some further
tracks added. As an Ash fan and subscriber to the series I
have my fingers crossed that this will finally be a hit for them.
'Won't
Go Quietly' is the new single by twenty seven year old rapper
Example (real name Elliot Gleave) and is the follow up to his top
twenty hit 'Watch The Sun Come Up' which spent four weeks on the
chart last year. It is also the title track from his forthcoming
album which is due for release in the next few weeks. Rumours
around the internet suggest that collaborators on the album could
include the likes of Chase & Status and Calvin Harris but at
the time of writing these remain unsubstantiated. His debut album
'What We Made' came out way back in 2007 but none of the five
singles released from it managed to make it to the top forty. This
week sees him playing his own headline gig at
Derby
which will serve as a warm up for his
UK
tour next month supporting Tinchy Stryder.
The
much hyped band Johnny Cola & The A Grades release their latest
single 'Out Of Focus' on 7" vinyl this week, and it comes
backed with the new track 'Budget Flight To Faro'. Last week
saw the band play The Wilmington Arms in Clerkenwell while next
week will see them appear at Sod Wednesdays at The Legion in
Shoreditch. They are also due to play at Pull Up The Roots at The
Old Queens Head in Islington in early February. Fans of this may
be interested in picking up the bands highly rated mini album 'The
Yellow Mini' although neither of these new tracks feature on that
release. The band are very much tipped for big things in
2010 and now this is finally seeing the light of day after a ten
week delay it could well see them gain a debut top forty
appearance.
'Playing
With Fire' is the new single from N-Dubz, and it also features Mr
Hudson who came to prominence last year following his
collaborations with Kayne West and Jay-Z. The band have had a
great couple of years with an O2 Silver Clef and three MOBO awards
to their name. Their last album 'Uncle B' made no.11 and spawned
six singles while this is the second release from their top ten
release 'Against All Odds'. The exact date of release has been
moved due to clashes with Mr Hudson's collaboration with Jay-Z on
'Forever Young' though both tracks are already inside the top
forty on download sales. This has been slowly moving up the chart
over the past few weeks and could improve its position still
further this weekend despite the adverse publicity around
Dappy’s recent exploits!
Huskey
Rescue are an ambient pop band hailing from
Finland
who are fronted by Marko Nyberg. They are about to release their
fourth studio album 'Ship Of Light' on the Catskills label, and
from it comes their limited edition single 'Sound Of Love'.
While the band name may not be too familiar to the British record
buying public, their song 'New Light Of Tomorrow' featured in a
P&O television advertisment and 'My World' was used in
Hyundai's 'Think About It' series of commercials. They are
due to undertake a short tour in March where they will be playing
at venues in
Bath
, Brighton,
London
and
Birmingham
. Fans can also download the track 'We Shall Burn Bright'
for free from the bands website. They still only have a small
following and so I don't see this making the top forty for them.
'Trouble
In Mind' is this weeks final single under review and it is
released this week on 7" vinyl by Erland & The Carnival.
It's the follow up to 'Was You Eversee' single and it precedes
next weeks release of their self titled album. The digital
download bundle features the additional tunes 'Honeytrap Killer'
and '
Arabian Sea
' alongside the main track while the 7" comes backed with the
J Star Mr Wallace Dub version of the track. This week they
are appearing at Rough Trade in
London
and Resident Records in
Brighton
before a series of headlining gigs in February, and some further
concerts supporting Tunng in March. The track has been
played almost 4,000 times on their MySpace site but they will need
to record substantially more sales than that if they are to score
a hit with this.
Also
released this week are 'Broken Heels' by Alexandra Burke, Wonderful
Life' by Hurts and 'Since You Went Away' by So Solid.
Download only releases this week include 'Next To Me' by Alan
Cumming, 'Doctor Can' by Ben Dalby, 'The Infinites' by Bomb The
Bass, 'One More Drink' by Charlie Sloth, 'Play Together' by Chew
Lips, 'Supafly' by Fugative, 'Pump It Up' by Hot Rats, 'Your
Hand In Mind' by Liam Frost featuring Martha Wainwright, 'My
Secret Lover' by Private and 'Momma's Place' by Roisin Murphy.
My
money is on Iyaz to secure a third week at the top with any
challenge likely to come from
Owl
City
or the Glee cast. Don't forget to stop by next week when artists
releasing new singles look set to include Daniel Evans, Editors,
Jamie Cullum and Ocean Colour Scene. Until then have
yourself a good week.
