With
Craig David only making it to number
three and Ronan Keating
entering at six the charts have started
to show some elements of surprise. Destiny's Child
took the top spot though LeAnn Rimes
did well to hold on at number two. |
This week sees three acts who
might hope to be scoring a number one this week,
though realistically only one of them can win...
My tip for the top this week is
Madonna. Enjoying a second coming (if she
ever went away that is) in the year 2000, her new
release could see a third number one this year
for her. Never before has she scored three
number ones in a row and it will see her score
her eleventh number one. That puts her
behind The Beatles (17
number ones), Elvis Presley (also 17 number ones)
and Cliff Richard (14 number ones) in the all
time list. 'Don't Tell Me' is more
immediate than music and is accompanied by a line
dancing video! Only Madonna could get away
with it, and despite strong competition I expect
her to triumph on Sunday.
S Club 7 have enjoyed top three
success with all their six singles released so
far and there is no reason for their new song 'Never
Had A Dream Come True' to end that run. 'Natural'
performed less well than there other singles,
quickly dipping to number 10 in its second week
of chart action. Backed with endless
television appearances over the past month and
coupled with the fact that all royalties are
going to Children In Need this is a possible
contender for number one, though past showings
have seen them fall short of the kind of sales
needed to top the charts at this time of year.
The third contender is Melanie C who
releases the fifth single from her acclaimed 'Northern
Star' CD. 'If That Were Me' is
impressive stuff from the headline hitting Spice
Girl though as it is the fifth single from the
album I expect it to be her third number four
rather than her third number one.
Interestingly if you include group releases
Melanie C has scored 11 number ones (9 with the
Spice Girls and 2 solo) which leaves her behind
the impressive company of Paul McCartney (21
number ones), John Lennon (20 number ones),
George Harrison (18 number ones), Elvis Presley (17
number ones) and Cliff Richard (14 number ones).
London readers may recognise
Sonique's new song 'I Put A Spell On You' as being
used to advertise their local independent radio
station on TV at the moment, but hardened
clubbers will recognise it more as the
underground dance hit which was originally a hit
just over two years ago. 'It Feels So Good'
was only number 24 on its original venture into
chart territory yet managed to top the charts for
three weeks this year so you would expect to see
an improvement from its initial 1998 peak of
number 36. Top ten at the very least.
That's not the end of the big
artists hoping to be in the top forty come
Christmas week. Bon Jovi return with the
obligatory ballad this week entitled 'Thank You
For Loving Me'. It's the third single from
their album 'Crush' and you can almost hear the
grand guitar solo mixing with Jon's gravelly
voice, though few do the rock ballad better than
these guys. I don't forsee this challenging
the top five spot achieved by 'It's My Life' and
may find itself landing outside the top 10 on
this occasion.
The second in what I fear may be a
whole series of Budweiser themed records is Da
Muttz who release 'Wazzup' this week. The
True Party song of the same name is already high
in the charts and sadly this may well join it in
the top twenty.
Hot on the heels of their recently
released 'Best of...' come UB40 with their song 'Light
My Fire'. They were last in our
charts last year with 'The Train Is Coming' and
it would prove welcome relief to the charts if
they are to score a top twenty hit this weekend.
It may drop short of that milestone, but I look
forward to hearing more new material from them
soon.
It was only last year that Apollo
440 scored success with their reworking of the 'Lost
In Space' film music and now they return with a
reworking of another film score, 'Charlie's Angels'.
With Drew Barrymore, Lucy Lui and Cameron Diaz
looking set to be a box office smash in the film,
I expect this single to join the craze for the 70's
show. With 'Independent Women' already at
number one in the charts I would expect to see
this do quite well to - a high top ten entry I
predict.
There is never enough room to look
at all the singles released so I should just
mention Sheena Easton's comeback song 'Giving Up,
Giving In' which is her first release in over ten
years, The Stone Roses reissue of 'Sally Cinnamon'
and Foo Fighters with 'Next Year'.
Luckily you only have to wait
until next week and not next year for the next
installment of Chart Chat, but for this week
Madonna continues to show why she is the Queen Of
Pop. See you in seven days...
