The
first chart after Christmas is often unpredictable with
festive songs plumetting down the charts while a lack of
new releases and a series of review shows send older
records bouncing back up. Perhaps that goes some way to
explaining a chart with eight re-entries, one new entry,
twenty climbers, three non movers and just eight songs
going down.

Lady Gaga went back
up to the top with ‘Bad Romance’ and in doing so displaces Joe
McElderry who spent just one week at the top of the charts with
‘The Climb’. He slides to no.2 this week with his download
sales falling substantially but his physical sales are still
holding up.
Black Eyed Peas went
back up three to no.3 with 'Meet Me Halfway' and Ke$ha climbed six
to no.4 with 'Tik Tok'. Cheryl Cole featuring will.i.am fell one
to no.5 with '3 Words' and 3OH!3 featuring Katy Perry went down a
place to no.6 with 'Starstrukk'. Journey were a non mover at no.7
with 'Don't Stop Believin'' while Rihanna also stayed the same at
no.8 with 'Russian Roulette'. Robbie Williams was a non mover at
no.9 with 'You Know Me' and the top ten was concluded by Chipmunk
featuring Talay Riley which climbed three to no.10 with 'Look For
Me'.
All ten songs
between no.11 and no.20 were climbers. Cheryl Cole went up three
to no.11 with 'Fight For This Love' while Alexandra Burke
featuring Flo Rida climbed thirteen to no.12 with 'Bad Boys'.
Florence & The Machine went up eighteen places to no.13 with
'You Got The Love' and Black Eyed Peas climbed ten to no.14 with
'I Gotta Feeling'. JLS went up seven to no.15 with 'Everybody In
Love' and Jason Derulo climbed a place to no.16 with 'Whatcha
Say'. The Saturdays advanced three to no.17 with 'Ego' and N-Dubz
featuring Mr Hudson climbed a further place to no.18 with 'Playing
With Fire'. 'Broken Heels' went up four to no.19 for Alexandra
Burke and the top twenty was rounded off by Jay-Z featuring Alicia
Keys.
There were eight
re-entries, one new entry and six climbers in the lower half of
the chart as the festive tunes dropped from the top forty and TV
reviews of the year boosted sales of older tracks. Wiley featuring
Chew Fu got a new entry at no.22 with 'Take That' while Michael
Buble went back up five places to no.23 with 'Haven't Met You
Yet'. Pixie Lott went back up two to no.24 with 'Cry Me Out' and
Jay Sean featuring Lil Wayne climbed up seven to no.26 with
'Down'. Jay-Z featuring Mr Hudson went up three places to no.27
with 'Forever Young' while Leona Lewis climbed back up nine places
to no.28 with 'Happy'. Miley Cyrus went back up seven to no.29
with 'Party In The USA' while Kings Of Leon scored a re-entry at
no.30 with 'Sex On Fire'.
Lady Gaga re-entered
at no.32 with 'Poker Face' and David Guetta featuring Akon also
re-entered at no.33 with 'Sexy Bitch'. JLS re-entered at no.34
with 'Beat Again' and N-Dubz re-entered at no.36 with 'I Need
You'. 'I Can Transform Ya' re-entered at no.37 for Chris Brown
featuring Lil Wayne while Taio Cruz also re-entered at no.38 with
'Break Your Heart'. The final re-entry went to Snow Patrol at
no.39 with 'Chasing Cars' which gains its 95th week on the chart
and returns thanks to the fact it won the 'Song Of The Decade'
poll on Channel 4 Music over the festive period.
Manchester based
Polydor Records act Delphic release their new single 'Doubt' this
week. The track was debuted on the Later...With Jools Holland TV
show back in November and now gets a full release. It is available
on both CD and 7" formats with the bonus track being
'Sanctuary'. They are one of the fifteen bands nominated for the
BBC Sound Of 2010 poll and release their debut album 'Acolyte' a
week later. The album also features previous singles
'Counterpoint' and 'This Momentary'. The band are about to embark
on a UK tour and kick off this week at The Garage in London.
February sees them take off to Europe and will tour Germany and
Scandanavia although they do return for a London appearance again
later on in the month. Watch out for this inside the top forty.
Welsh rockers
Lostprophets are hoping to kick off the new year with a hit single
in the shape of new release 'Where We Belong'. It is available on
CD and etched 7" vinyl with the CD featuring new track
'Sunshine'. The single precedes the release of new album
'Betrayed' by two weeks. They have a detailed tour in place to
promote the album, kicking off in mid January in Aberdeen and then
concluding in Port Talbot at the start of March. This should
become their eleventh top forty hit, and could even go on to
become their third top ten hit following on from 'Rooftops (A
Liberation Broadcast)' in 2006 and 'Last Train Home' in 2004 which
both made no.8. Their last album made the top spot and they will
be hoping to achieve similar success over the course of the coming
month.
'Ego' is already
perfoming well inside the top thirty thus becoming the seventh hit
for girl band The Saturdays. They are the only female act who can
trouble Girls Aloud's dominance and hope to take advantage of
their year off by posting some hits of their own. The past
eighteen months has seen them notch up five top ten hits with only
'Work' stopping short, though that was caught up in the deluge of
Michael Jackson tracks charting after his untimely death in June.
The accompanying video sees the girls all dressed up as different
superheroes and is guaranteed to receive regular airplay in the
coming weeks. This could take advantage as the previous years
songs start to slide in popularity and it would be great to see
this riding high inside the top ten next Sunday afternoon.
It's amazing to
consider that Ash have been going for seventeen years now. Tim
Wheeler, Mark Hamilton and Rick McMurray have been the mainstays
throughout though they were joined by additional guitarist
Charlotte Hatherley between 1997 and 2006. Regular readers of this
column may be aware that the band are currently in the middle of
their A-Z singles campaign which has seen them release a new
single every fortnight. So far they have achieved disappointing
chart positions ranging from no.171 for 'Joy Kicks Darkness' to
no.114 for 'Arcadia' with the others all falling in between. The
vinyl versions are limited to 1,000 pressings per release but the
downloads are commonly available. Next single 'Space Shot' is
receiving more promotion and so may perform better for them.
'Remember Me' is the
much delayed single release by TI featuring Mary J Blige which
looks set to see the light of day again this week. The single
originally made no.34 last year but is expected to perform much
better at the second time of asking. TI enjoyed the peak of his
popularity at the end of 2008 / start of 2009 when his Rihanna and
Justin Timberlake collaborations both made the top five. He first
appeared to the US market in 2001 when he collaborated with Beenie
Man on 'I'm Serious' but scored his first UK hit five years ago
with 'ASAP'. It's the fifth hit to come from his 'Paper Trail'
album which has made just no.42 in the UK despite topping the
charts in the US. I think this will chart much higher this time
around and could even become the third top ten single to be lifted
from the album.
'Cruel Intentions'
is the new single by Simian Mobile Disco. The band consist of Jas
Shaw and James Ford and were formed from the ashes of previous
band Simian back in 2005. The single is released across two twelve
inch vinyl formats and features the vocals of Gossip singer Beth
Ditto. The first twelve inch features the Greg Wilson Re-edit
alongside the Maurice Fulton Remix while the second contains the
DJ Pierre Dub Mix and the Space Cave SMD 12" Extended Mix.
Last month saw them play a series of gigs in the UK but now they
are off for some personal appearances in Australia. The track
originally featured on the bands EP / LP 'Temporary Pleasure'
which was released last Summer. The album also featured guest
appearances from Jamie Liddell, Gruff Rhys and Chris Keating.
Sidney Samson
featuring Wizard Sleeve release their brand new single 'Riverside
(Let's Go)' this week. It is released across both CD and 12"
formats with the CD version containing the Dirty Edit and the
Let's Go Dirty Dub while the 12" vinyl has the Warren Clarke
Remix, the Dirty Extended Mix, the Let's Go Dub and the Kurd
Maverick Remix. For those unaware of his work, Samson is a twenty
eight year old Dutch DJ who usually works at The Matrixx and has
been DJing for over half his life. This track has already made the
top ten in his homeland and also down in Australia and will be
hoping for a similar level of success in the UK. This has been
doing the business on dancefloors over the Christmas period and
now looks like it has a good chance of crossing over into a
mainstream hit.
'Ambling Alp' is the
new single by Yeasayer. They are described as an experimental band
based in Brooklyn, New York and consist of three members; Anand
Wilder, Chris Keating and Ira Wolf Tuton. They toured in 2008
across the UK and the rest of Europe with MGMT and Man Man and
have their second album 'Odd Blood' scheduled for release this
year. To date their only other commercial single was 'Wait For The
Summer' which was released in 2007 when it was lifted from their
debut album 'All Hour Cymbals'. They are due to play some UK
concerts in February before heading further afield into Europe
during April. The single is released on 12" vinyl and comes
with the Instrumental, the Memory Tapes Remix, the DJ / Rupture
& Brent Arnold Remix alongside the main version.
'Sweet Disposition'
by the Australian band Temper Trap was one of the best singles of
2009 and now their unenviable task is to prove they are so much
more than one hit wonders. This week sees them follow it up with
'Fader' which is released on a 7" vinyl format. It comes
backed with the Rockdaworld Vocal Radio Edit version of the track.
This is the second single taken from their 'Conditions' album
which made the top ten in their homeland but just no.26 so far in
the UK. Another track 'Science Of Fear' featured on the soundtrack
to the FIFA 10 computer game though this has yet to gain an
official release as a single. 'Fader' has picked up some airplay
on Radio 1 and could well hit the top forty next weekend but I
can't see it matching the success of its predecessor.
Also released this
week are 'Hot Mess' by Cobra Starship, 'Love Can Be A Battlefield'
by Florence Rawlings, 'Again' by Flyleaf, 'Replay' by Iyaz, 'Don't
Let It Go To Your Head' by Jordin Sparks, 'Move For Me' by Kaskade
vs Deadmau5 and 'Written In Reverse' by Spoon. Download only
releases include 'Don't Look Back' by Matt Bianco and 'I'm N Luv
(Wit A Stripper)' by T-Pain.
Lady Gaga will be
looking to hold on at the top, but a newcomer such as Sidney
Samson could steal her crown. My money is on her, but anything can
happen as well truly get into 2010. Don't forget to stop by next
week when artists releasing new singles look set to include
Alexandra Burke, Jay-Z featuring Mr Hudson, Madness and Paolo
Nutini. Until then have yourself a good week.
