Well last weeks chart saw the biggest fall from grace since Westlife fell from 1 to 8 earlier this year.  In fact only a handful have had a bigger fall from number one including over the years Flying Pickets, Harry Belafonte and Iron Maiden.  That won't bother A1 as there can't have been many acts who have chalked up two number one hits in two months!

So LeAnn Rimes triumphed over Daft Punk with the resiliant Ba-Ha Men holding on in third spot.  It could be all change again this week as two artists with 100% succesful solo careers go head to head.

Possibly the favourite due to his ability to appeal to a wider age range is Ronan Keating.  Ronan is, in my opinion, in major danger of becoming the new Gary Barlow.  Undoubtedly he is a fine singer and talented songwriter though his latest effort 'The Way You Make Me Feel' is really ballading by numbers.  He is no fool though - such music is the reason for his success with Boyzone. Interestingly enough the b-side sees him duetting with Maire Brennan of Clannad on 'Fairytale Of New York'.  The lyrics were hardly x-rated yet Ronan has decided to clean them up - how dare he touch the lyrics of one of the finest songs of all time!

Reason enough to make Craig David number one!  He returns after the huge success of 'Fill Me In' and '7 Days' with 'Walking Away'.  To me 'Fill Me In' was fairly standard r'n'b fare while '7 Days' oozed class and was easily one of the finest moments of the Summer.  Unbelievably 'Walking Away' is even better and certainly deserves to be number one, though the musical Gods may conspire against him this week.   Even a number two hit would end a hugely successful year for the young teenager.

Possibly behind the Backstreet Boys in popularity here are N-Sync.  In fact their main claim to fame is that lead singer Justin is famously dating Britney Spears!   That could all be set to change with their new ballad 'This I Promise To You'.  The band are so popular in the USA that they rarely leave those shores, a possible stumbling block to success in the UK and the rest of Europe.  Their new single has received much airplay and could well crash into the top three, though I don't expect Craig or Ronan to be looking too concerned at the competition.

Destiny's Child could also enter the charts top five with their single taken from the new Charlie's Angels movie.  Entitled 'Independant Woman' it's more of their winning formula and with closest rivals The Honeyz bombing out at number 24 with their last single release this could see them further increase their claim to be the premier all girl band in the world at the moment.

Brian Harvey was last in our charts with E-17.  'Betcha Can't Wait' was their farewell single, making number 12 last year.  Brian is now back courtesy of the Truesteppers, guesting on the classy 'True Step Tonight'.  It's unlikely to sell quite as well as Victoria and Dane's 'Out Of Your Mind' but its bound to sound ten times better when on the dance floor.  It's not just going to be a one off collaboration for Brian - it went so well you can expect to see him on more Truesteppers material in the not too distant future.

'Operation Blade' by Public Domain has been in huge demand prior to its release so it is expected to debut inside the top twenty, if not the top ten.  It samples Pump Panels mix of New Order's 'Confusion' as seen in the film 'Blade'.  Public Domain have added some serious bassline to the song and also a sample of Public Enemy's Flavor Flav yelling 'bass in your face London'.  In might sound a curious mixture but it does work, and its not hard to see why this record has been doing the business on dance floors country wide for the last few months.

Paul Van Dyk should also be seen fairly high in next weeks chart with his new song 'We Are Alive'.  Easily one of the most innovative makers of dance music around at the moment this should serve to further enhance his reputation as first class DJ and first rate music maker.

Next week sees the return of the new sexier Britney, the old (but still sexy) Madonna, Billie Piper and S Club 7 so you can tell that Christmas is just around the corner!

I'll leave you with my prediction for this week.  It's quality vs quantity, and while Craig David oozes quality it may be that Ronan has the quantity of fans required to win.  See you next week for the start of another year of chart chat!

JOHN WRITES - I wonder if Ian really did put all his money on Daft Punk last week, let's hope he made it an each way bet because it was indeed was Le-Ann Rimes that made it to the top spot as I said last week.

You may have heard me mention the Spice Girls several times over the past few weeks saying I feel they may have had their day, cetainly with the girls following their solo paths I wonder what they can do now as a group?
Maybe one or two of the girls feel keeping the group together would be a good idea just in case someone catches on they have no talent as a solo artists.
It will be interesting to see how loyal the girls are to the group when one of the girls makes it really big, of course the question is who will make it big?
I suggest Mel C because she has made good on the USA club scene with
"I Turn to You" and she releases her new single "If That Were Me" in the UK next week.

Mel C has surprised me with her talent, she has quite a singing range and can be quite cute, I would say the same for ex Spice girl Gerri Halliwell who again has the ability to be BIG!!
