So
newcomer Pixie Lott made her debut at the top of the chart
with ‘Mama Do’ and in doing so relegated Black Eyed
Peas back to no.2 with ‘Boom Boom Pow’ following its
second run at the top.
Agnes
went back up a place to no.3 with ‘Release Me’ while
Dizzee Rascal featuring Armand Van Helden fell two places
to no.4 with ‘Bonkers’.

Daniel
Merriweather held steady again at no.5 with ‘Red’ while no.6
was also a non mover for Keri Hilson featuring Kanye West &
Ne-Yo with ‘Knock You Down’. ‘When Love Takes Over’ was a
new entry for David Guetta featuring Kelly Rowland at no.7 while
‘Fire’ by Kasabian fell five places to no.8. The Veronicas
were a non mover at no.9 with ‘Untouched’ and the top ten was
concluded by Soulja Boy featuring Sammie who went down three
places to no.10 with ‘Kiss Me Thru The Phone’.
There
were two new entries in the remainder of the top twenty and one
climber. Lady Gaga got the highest of those new entry with
‘Paparazzi’ making its debut at no.13 while Katy Perry climbed
seven places to no.19 with ‘Waking Up In Vegas’. The
other new entry went to
Linkin
Park
at no.20 with ‘New Divide’ which is taken from the new
Transformers movie.
There
were a further six new entries in the lower half of the chart.
The first of those went to Jordin Sparks at no.21 with
‘Battlefield’ closely followed by Airi L at no.22 with ‘When
Love Takes Over’. Pussycat Dolls made their debut at no.25 with
‘Hush Hush Hush Hush’ and Kasabian got a new entry at no.32
with ‘Underdog’. Lenka went straight in at no.33 with ‘The
Show’ and the remaining new entry went to The Saturdays at no.38
with ‘Work’.
‘When
Love Takes Over’ is the new single by the renowned forty two
year old French DJ David Guetta. It features former Destinys
Child member Kelly Rowland on guest vocals and Guetta will be
hoping it becomes his first top forty hit since ‘Love Is Gone’
back in 2007. The track has already managed to get to the top ten
in both
Belgium
and
Switzerland
and it has gone all the way to the top of the
US
dance charts. It gets a physical release on CD and 12” formats
this week and looks destined for a top forty appearance next
weekend when the charts are announced. So far Guetta has enjoyed
three top forty appearances in the
UK
with his biggest being ‘Love Don’t Let Me Go (Walking Away)’
which got as far as the top three. Should at least be top twenty
next Sunday afternoon.
‘Said
It All’ is the latest release from Take That’s current
‘Circus’ album. Last year saw ‘Greatest Day’ notch up
their eleventh number one, and their third since reforming back in
2006. Their last single ‘Up All Night’ peaked at no.14 and
with so many fans owning the album it would appear that this
latest release may suffer a similar problem. It is released
on a CD format with the b side being the new track being
‘Throwing Stones’. Their Circus tour of the
UK
became one of the fastest selling of all time and few would have
believed just how big they would be the second time around.
This Summer sees them play Wembley Stadium and there appears to be
no end to their success. This should be inside the top
twenty, or possibly even the top ten next weekend.
Depeche
Mode are usually experts at exploiting the multi format single to
their advantage but their last release ‘Wrong’ fell flat
making just no.24, a disappointing placing for the first single
from their album. This week sees them release ‘Peace’ as the
second single, and it is hard to see it performing much better,
particularly now that so many fans will own the album. The main CD
comes with an array of new mixes including Herves Warehouse
Frequencies Remix, the Sander Van Doorn Remix, the Japanese
Popstars Remix, the Sid LeRock Remix and the Justin Kohncke
Extended Disco Club Vocal Remix while the other CD format features
the SixToes Remix. There is also a 7” white marble vinyl format
with the Jonsi Remix of ‘Come Back’ on the flip side.
‘Kiss
Me Thru The Phone’ is the latest single by eighteen year old
American rapper Soulja Boy. It gets its full physical
release this week although an Australian import version has been
available already through some high street retailers. The track
made the top three in
America
and has already featured well inside the top ten in the
UK
. So far it is only his second
UK
hit with his first ‘Crank That (Soulja Boy)’ becoming famous
for the dance which accompanied it. The follow up ‘Yahh’
featured Arab but failed to set the charts alight peaking at just
no.49. This physical format release doesn’t even contain
many new mixes of the track and so may not inspire many of his
fans to go out and buy it. May well be able to push it up a
couple of notches inside the top ten though.
Jarvis
Cocker is back with his brand new single ‘Angela’ this week,
and it’s the first to be taken from his current studio album
‘Further Complications’ which made the top twenty upon its
release earlier this year. While his work as the frontman of
Sheffield
indie band Pulp is well documented, he has made just one top forty
appearance in his career as a solo artist that being with
‘Don’t Let Him Waste Your Time’ back in 2007, though it made
just no.36. It is only available on 7” vinyl and comes backed
with the bonus track ‘I Found Myself Looking For God’.
While interest is growing in his work as a solo artist he is
likely to become more renowned as an album artist and even with
his loyal fanbase my feeling is that this will struggle to get
anywhere near the top forty.
Jack
Penate first came to the public eye with his top ten single
‘Torn On The Platform’ back in 2007. He followed that up with
‘Second, Minute Or Hour’ which also made the top twenty and
soon to follow was his top ten debut album ‘Matinee’. This
year saw him return with ‘Tonights Today’ which is the first
single to be taken from his new album ‘Everything Is New’
which is scheduled in for a mid June release. That peaked at
no.23 and he will be hoping for similar success with his new
single ‘Be The One’ which is released this week on 7” vinyl
and CD formats. The CD features the Fly Union mix as the bonus
track while the 7” has ‘Down Below’ on the flip side.
As usual this is catchy uptempo radio friendly fare which should
secure him another hit record.
Blazin
Squad return after a long absence this week with their new single
‘Let’s Start Again’. It is released on a CD format and
features both the radio edit and the Bashy & Chipmunk remix of
the main track. In their first incarnation as a ten piece they
enjoyed six top ten singles including their number one debut
single, a cover of Bone, Thugs & Harmony’s track
‘Crossroads’. They also recorded two top forty albums in
the shape of ‘In The Beginning’ and ‘Now Or Never’. They
originally split back in 2005 following Kenzies appearance on
Celebrity Big Brother though they subsequently then returned as a
four piece for the 2006 single ‘All Night Long’ which made
just no.54. Now they are back again as a five piece and
hoping to relaunch their career with this new single.
Three
piece American rockers Gossip are perhaps best known for their
larger than life singer Beth Ditto but they also deserve
This week sees them release their new single ‘Heavy Cross’ is
available on a CD format with the other song being a Fred Falke
mix of the main track. ‘Standing In The Way Of Control’ is
perhaps their best known track charting in 2006 and then scoring a
reissue following its use on the Channel 4 programme ‘Skins’.
Their only other top forty appearance came with their 2007 reissue
of their 2006 single ‘Listen Up’ though it peaked at just
no.39. This is the first full single to be taken from their latest
studio album ‘Music For Men’ and should ensure that they
return to the UK top thirty with early download sales for the
track appearing strong.
‘Lifeline’
is the new single from
California
based Grammy award winning band Papa Roach. It is available this
week on a 7” vinyl format and features both the radio remix and
an acoustic version of the main track. Their 2000 album
‘Infest’ made the top ten, and the follow up
‘Lovehatetragedy’ got as far as the top three but since then
they have seen their popularity in the UK fade a little with their
latest and sixth studio album ‘Metamorphosis’ has so far made
just no.42. This is a low key release which may serve to boost
airplay for the album but is unlikely to see them mount a serious
assault on the singles chart. The band describe their latest sound
as being much harder and faster than recent efforts though whether
that endears them to their fanbase remains to be seen.
Also
released this week on physical formats are ‘Release Me’ by
Agnes, ‘Over It’ by Dinosaur Jr, ‘Bloodsport’ by Official
Secrets Axt, ‘Hometime / Givin’ Up’ by One EskimO, ‘Stone
Cold Sober’ by Paloma Faith, ‘Before The Worst’ by The
Script, and ‘Critical’ by Soft Toy Emergency. Download only
releases include ‘Things My Father Said’ by Black Stone
Cherry, ‘London Is The Reason’ by The Gallows, ‘Doctor
Doctor’ by Just Jack, ‘Satellite Skin’ by Modest Mouse,
‘If Today Was Your Last Day’ by Nickelback, ‘Now I Run’ by
Shannon Noll and ‘All The Plans’ by Starsailor.
Only
perhaps David Guetta featuring Kelly Rowland can pose a serious
threat at the top but my money is on Pixie Lott to hold on for a
second week of glory. Don’t forget to stop by next week when
artists releasing new singles look set to include Basement Jaxx,
The Enemy, Enrique Iglesias and Freemasons featuring Sophie Ellis
Bextor. Until then have yourself a good week.
