And so Chicane & Bryan Adams
kept up another good week for Chart Chat, but the
5ive boys did let us down with a new entry at
just number 9. So what does this week hold
in store...
This has to be the best week of
the year so far! With the exception of the
dreary Macy Gray who is back to annoy us with her
new song 'Still' (but if you liked the last one
you will like this one) there are some corking
tunes available - I ended up with 11 singles from
the record shop earlier and a rather large hole
in my wallet!
Number one spot looks set to be
contested by ATB who last hit number one last
summer with the suggestive '9pm (Till I Come)'.
This time Adamski's 'Killer' gets the Andre
Tannenbaum treatment and strangely it has never
sounded better. Those on a shoestring
budget should note that the CD is actually
available at just £1.99 in many outlets so there
is no excuse not to purchase it.
Geri Halliwell is the main rival
to ATB with her fourth and finest single 'Bag It
Up'. With an arrangement straight out of
the 'Who Do You Think You Are' song book this has
a catchy hook guaranteed to tantalise the
mainstream market. If you would like to
hear another side to the talented Miss Halliwell
you can check out her cover versions of Nancy
Sinatra's 'These Boots Are Made For Walking' and
Doris Day's 'Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps'.
Despite the brilliance of the two
singles listed above, Single of the Week has to
be Blink 182's 'All The Small Things'. The
chorus is as particularly catchy and before you
know it this will have lodged itself inside your
head and you will be playing air guitar in your
breaks. Originally I had this down to enter
around 25, but early indications are that this
could actually pierce the top 10! Go out
and buy a copy just to check it does.
Keeping up with their off the wall
songwriting are Baby Bird who return with 'The F-Word'.
Parents can rest assured that it does not
actually mention the f word while the record
buying public can be reassured that this is Baby
Bird at their best.
Though not quite in the 'Don't
Speak' league, No Doubt return with a new song
entitled 'Ex-Girlfriend'. It's a run of the
mill ska song just made bearable by the gorgeous
Gwen Stefani on vocals, though what she has done
with her hair remains a mystery!
Dance music fans could do worse
than Will Smith's latest effort which is entitled
'Freakin' It'. The best bit is Larry
Blackmon of Cameo's guest appearance on the b-side
- a cover version of Cameo's 'Candy'. Also
out on a dance tip is Eminem's partner in crime
Dr Dre with 'Still Dre'. It teaches the
younger generation of rap superstars a thing or
two!
So what will be the outcome this
week? My money is on Geri Halliwell to edge
out ATB at the top, but only the record buying
public can decide if that will happen. See
you next week for the return of the Cuban Boys,
Mel C, Moloko, Primal Scream and Metallica -
complete with an entire orchestra!
