There were five new entries, twelve climbers, seven non movers and just sixteen songs going down on this weeks chart.  The first climber came at the top as Yolanda Be Cool & D Cup climbed a place to no.1 with 'We Speak No Americano'. Their nearest rivals this week were Eminem featuring Rihanna who also went up one to no.2 with 'Love The Way You Lie'.  All this activity meant that last weeks no.1 'Airplanes' by B.o.B. featuring Hayley Williams fell two places to no.3.

Katy Perry featuring Snoop Dogg was a non mover at no.4 with 'California Gurls' while Eliza Doolittle continued her slow climb as 'Pack Up' went up three to no.5. Mark Ronson and the Business Intl featuring Q Tip & MNDR were a non mover at no.6 with 'Bang Bang Bang' and Professor Green featuring Lily Allen fell two to no.7 with 'Just Be Good To Green'. 'I Like It' climbed one to no.8 for Enrique Iglesias featuring Pitbull and JLS went down two to no.9 with 'The Club Is Alive. The top ten was concluded by 3OH!3 featuring Ke$ha who were a non mover at no.10 with 'My First Kiss'.

A further four climbers and one new entry were to be found in what remained of the top twenty. Kelly Rowland featuring David Guetta edged up one to no.14 with 'Commander' and Plan B climbed one to no.16 with 'Prayin''. Tinie Tempah featuring Labrinth went back up two to no.17 with 'Frisky' and Jason Derulo got the weeks highest climber going up twenty one to no.19 with 'What If'.  The only new entry came at no.20 and went to Usher featuring Pitbull with 'DJ Got Us Falling In Love'.

There were four climbers and four new entries in the lower half of the chart. Basshunter went straight in at no.21 with 'Saturday' while former no.1 'OMG' by Usher featuring will.i.am climbed back up a place to no.22. Drake went up four to no.24 with 'Find Your Love' and Plan B climbed back up eight places to no.25 with 'She Said'. Pendulum got a new entry at no.29 with 'Witchcraft' and Train went back up one to no.31 with 'Hey Soul Sister'. Diana Vickers could only manage no.36 with her second single 'The Boy Who Murdered Love' while the final new entry went to Scouting For Girls at no.37 with 'Famous'.

Damon Albarn's leading project Gorillaz are back this week with 'On Melancholy Hill', the second track to be taken from their current musically diverse 'Plastic Beach' album. The album was denied the top spot by Boyzone, who had seen surge in sales that week following the publicity around their TV tribute to Stephen Gately.  The opening single 'Stylo' featured Mos Def and was accompanied by a Bruce Willis video but could still only peak at no.58. They have enjoyed five top ten hits including their only number one 'Dare' which saw Shaun Ryder on guest vocals. Their last top forty appearance came back in 2006 with the double a side 'Kids With Guns / El Manana' though that made just no.27. I think this may suffer the same fate as its predecessor as I see Gorillaz as much more of an album project rather than a singles band.

Popular folk singer Katie Melua's rose to fame partly through her close collaboration with legendary producer Mike Batt.  He has chosen to take a step back on her new album 'House' and oversaw former Madonna producer William Orbit taking over at the controls. 'The Flood' was the first single to be taken from it, and it became her seventh top forty hit, peaking at no.35. The album peaked at no.4, her lowest position to date, and saw her work with a variety of songwriters including Rick Nowels and Guy Chambers. Although not really being a singles artist she has enjoyed two top five hits including her chart topping duet 'Wonderful World' which was recorded with vocals from Eva Cassidy. While I like her new single 'A Happy Place' it's unlikely to win her any new fans and as such I expect it to miss out on the top forty.

Tom Jones returns this week with a double a sided single 'Did Trouble Me / Don't Knock'. It's the second single to be taken from his new album 'Praise & Blame' and follows on from the limited edition release of 'Burning Hell / What Good Am I?'. His last number one came as recently as last year when he featured on the Comic Relief single 'Islands In The Stream' along with Robin Gibb and comedians Rob Brydon and Ruth Jones. That came some 44 years after he first made it to the summit with 'It's Not Unusual'.  He has notched up thirty five seven forty hits although aside from his Comic Relief appearance it has been eight years since he last made it there in his own right with 'Tom Jones International'. It's amazing that he can still produce material like this at 70 years old although I'm not sure this will see himreturn to the top ten.

'Billionaire' is the brand new single from charismatic Gym Class Heroes frontman Travis McCoy and B.o.B. collaborator Bruno Mars. It's McCoy's first release as a solo artist and it has already gone on to make the top five in the US.  It is taken from his debut album 'Lazarus' and hopes to repeat that success over here. His band enjoyed three top forty hits in the UK with all of them making the top ten.  The band remain very much a unit and plan to release a new album together in 2010. He also famously guested on Kelly Rowland's 2008 single 'Daylight' although he probably gained more column inches for dating Katy Perry before she hooked up with Russell Brand. This is a fairly radio friendly track and sounds great with the recent Summer weather. I think it could well go all the way to the top of the charts.

Finally this come the much talked about Canadian duo Crystal Castles who return with their new single 'Baptism'. Their debut album made no.47 back in while their follow up managed a respectable no.48 back in May of this year. It's their eighth single with most of those releases coming on a limited edition vinyl format. They are about to head off for an extensive US tour but are set to play the Leeds / Reading festivals later in August and they are then back again for ten UK dates in October. The limited edition nature of their singles means they are unlikely to enjoy much in the way of commercial success but they have been slowly building a following in the UK. They have however managed to achieve small levels of fame from supporting Blur at their Hyde Park gigs last year while their 'Air War' single was used by Toshiba to promote their HD range of products.

It's often the most talented who are taken from us most young and that is certainly the case with former Stereophonics drummer Stuart Cable.  He had kick started his life again following his sacking from the band and had his own weekly radio show and had started a new band Killing For Company. This week sees the posthumous release of the track 'Former Mining Town' by his new band, and in case anyone thinks they are just cashing in, all proceeds raised from sales of the single go to the Teenage Cancer Trust and Ty Hafan, two charities Cable was proud to support.  If you remove the circumstances surrounding its release this is still a track which makes you sit up and take note.  It may be his final top forty appearance, but it may also be the most poignant.  Rest in peace Stuart.

Plan B officially releases his latest single 'Prayin'' this week, and its another track taken from his chart topping 'The Defamation Of Strickland Banks' album. Already this year he has seen 'Stay Too Long' make the top ten while 'She Said' performed even better getting as far as the top three.  This track has been slowly climbing the charts over the past few weeks and could well become the third top ten hit from the album.  His curious mix of falsetto vocals, northern soul music and aggresive raps have proved a hit with the record buying public and he is certainly one of the most original artists around.  His success has even fueled interest in his earlier album 'Who Needs Actions When You Got Words' which made the top thirty in 2006.  That wasn't a patch on his new material though.  Expect to see this continuing to climb next weekend.

Status Quo frontman Francis Rossi has never really achieved much from his solo career other than personal satisfaction and that is unlikely to change with the release of his new single 'One Step At A Time'. It is only available on download, and with his fan base already owning the album I don't see the reason for them to buy this single. To date his biggest single remains 'Give Myself To Love' which peaked at no.42 in 1996 although the 'King Of The Doghouse' album from which it was lifted was a commercial failure.  He also released two singles in 1985 though the accompanying 'Flying Debris' album was never released. Concerned fans of Status Quo need not worry as they are set to return as a group again later this year and have a re-recorded version of 'In The Army Now' set for release as a single in September.

Finally this week sees the return of the veteran electronic pioneer BT with his brand new single 'Forget Me'.  The track is taken from his recently released sixth studio album 'These Hopeful Machines. His biggest hit to date was the 1996 remix of 'Loving You More' which peaked at no.14 having made no.28 the year before. 'Flaming June' also charted twice for him in successive years but his last top forty appearance came guesting on Tiesto's 2004 hit 'Love Comes Again' which made just no.30. His success in the singles chart hasn't translated into album sales as only his 1997 long player 'ESCM' has enjoyed any kind of action making just no.35. This may do enough to give him a top forty hit but earlier releases have failed to chart so it is not looking likely that we will see him visiting next weeks chart.

Also released this week are 'Bad Girl' by Fugative, 'I Can Change' by LCD Soundsystem, 'I Need Air' by Magnetic Man featuring Angela Hunte, 'Love Get Out Of My Way' by Monarchy, 'Tomboy / Slow Motion' by Panda Bear, 'One (Your Name)' by Swedish House Mafia featuring Pharrell, 'All Time Low' by The Wanted and 'Girls Vs Boys' by Wilder. Download only releases this week include 'Smoke & Mirrors' by Ali Love, 'G.R.I.N.D' by Asher Roth, 'Oh Man' by Born Ruffians, 'Your Betrayal' by Bullet For My Valentine, 'For The Rabbits' by Caitlin Rose, 'Valentino' by Diane Birch, 'I'm Fly' by Donae'o, 'Find Your Love' by Drake, 'When The Beat Drops' by Ezcapade, 'The Frances Ruffelle EP' by Frances Ruffelle, 'Born Yesterday' by Gil featuring NY, 'Annie You Save Me' by Graffit6, 'They Are Coming' by Husky Rescue, 'Stay The Night' by Millionaires, 'Even Though' by Morcheeba, 'Shimmy' by Preeya featuring Mumzy Stranger, 'Butterflies' by Tone Damli,  'An Idea About Mary' by Wallis Bird and 'Crystal Clear' by Young Birds.

Don't forget to stop by next week when artists releasing new singles look set to include Flo Rida featuring David Guetta, The Hoosiers, Marina & The Diamonds and Toni Braxton.  Until then have yourself a good week.
