It
was all change on this weeks chart with nine new entries,
six climbers, twenty four songs going down and one non
mover. Relatively unknown Tiny Tempah went straight
in at the top with 'Pass Out' edging out Rihanna into
second spot as she climbed one place to no.2 with 'Rude
Boy'.

Last
weeks number one 'In My Head' fell two to no.3 for Jason Derulo
and Ellie Goulding stayed the same at no.4 with 'Starry Eyed'.
Florence & The Machine and Dizzee Rascal fell three places to
no.5 with their update of 'You Got The Dirtee Love' and Alicia
Keys went down one to no.6 with 'Empire State Of Mind Part II'.
Timbaland featuring Katy Perry went down one to no.7 with 'If We
Ever Meet Again' and 'Never Be Your Woman' was a new entry at no.8
for Naughty Boy presents Wiley featuring Emile Sande. Boyzone made
their debut at no.9 with 'Gave It All Away' while Cheryl Cole
edged up a place to no.10 thus ensuring 'Parachute' becomes her
third solo top ten hit.
There
were a further two new entries and further two climbers in the
remainder of the top twenty. Gramophonedzie scored a new
entry at no.12 with 'Why Don't You' and Daisy Dares You featuring
Chipmunk went straight in at no.13 with 'Number One Enemy'.
Ke$ha featuring 3OH!3 continued to climb as 'Blah Blah Blah' went
up nine to no.17 and Young Money featuring Lloyd climbed a further
four places to no.18 with 'Bedrock'.
There
were four new entries and two climbers in the lower half of the
chart. Black Eyed Peas scored another hit from 'The E.N.D.' as
'Rock That Body' entered at no.23 while Lady Gaga featuring
Beyonce went up six places to no.31 with 'Telephone'. Pixie Lott
went up two to no.33 with 'Gravity' and Mary J Blige got another
UK hit with 'I Am' becoming a new entry at no.34. Mumford &
Sons went in at no.37 with 'The Cave' and there was another new
entry for the Glee Cast at no.38 with 'Defying Gravity'.
Gabriella
Cilmi rose to fame with her 'Sweet About Me' single which was the
most played song of last year. As with so many before her
she has gone away to reinvent herself as a sex kitten and judging
by the free poster that comes with the CD format of her new single
'On A Mission' she may well have succeeded! 'Sweet About Me'
was the first of three hit singles to come from her top ten album
'Lessons To Be Learned' while this is the first to be lifted
from her second album 'Ten'. Once again Brian Higgins from Girls
Aloud songwriters Xenomania is working with her and this track has
been described as a mix of Blondie, Joan Jett and Van Halen.
Its a reinvention that actually works and with material like this
she should be back inside the top ten very soon.
'On
& On' is the latest single from Agnes, the twenty
one year old singer who won Swedish Idol back in 2005. She
managed to win the competition despite only progressing to the
latter stages of the contest as a judges wildcard and in doing so
became only the third act in the World to achieve that (for trivia
fans the other two were Ryan Malcolm in Canada and Almas
Kishkenbayev from Kazakhstan). So far she has notched up two top
forty appearances with her opening single 'Release Me' making
no.3 but the follow up 'I Need You Now' performed less well
peaking at just no.40. All the three singles are taken from her
'Dance Love Pop' which gets its UK release at the end of March. I
think this will do well for her and should see her back inside the
top twenty.
Crouch
End rock band Bombay Bicycle Club release their new single
'Evening Morning' this week. They opened the 2006 V Festival
following a competition held on Channel 4 entitled 'Road To
V'. In the final they defeated fellow London act The Holloways who
have since gone on to enjoy top forty success while Bombay Bicycle
have yet to enjoy much in the way of commercial success. This
track features on their album 'I Had The Blues But I Shook Them
Loose' and was the bands first single release though then it was
on the Young & Lost Club while this time around it has major
label backing on Island Records. It is released on 7"
vinyl and features the track 'Jewel' on the flip side. To
date the band have not come close to a debut top forty hit and I
don't think this will break that habit.
The
much talked about single 'I'm In The House' by Steve Aoki
featuring Zuper Blahq gets its release this week. Aoki is a
thirty three year old larger than life American club DJ and record
producer who has remixed for a variety of stars including Michael
Jackson, The Killers, Lenny Kravitz and Duran Duran. The digital
download format features the Sharam Love Fest Remix, the Gigi
Barocco Remix, the Count aka Herve's Burning Down Your... Mix and
the Dub Instrumental. To date Aoki's only Long Player remains his
strangely titled 2008 release 'Pillowface and His Airplane
Chronicles' which was a continuous fifty seven minutes of
music. This track has been picking up plenty of airplay and so I
fully expect it to become a top forty hit next weekend.
Pixie
Lott's career has got off to the best possible start with opening
singles 'Mama Do (Uh Oh Uh Oh)' and 'Boys & Girls' both
getting to the top spot. Her album 'Turn It Up' made no.6
and has gone platinum and she has won two MTV Europe Music Awards,
one Cosmopolitan and one Virgin Media Award. Her third
single 'Cry Me Out' just missed out on the top ten but has already
spent over four months on the chart thus ensuring continued
airplay. Now comes the fourth single 'Gravity' which I
expect to suffer a similar fate. Pixie is currently working
with producers on new material ahead of launching her career in
the US. The result will see a reissue of her album stateside
with one half featuring new material, the other being tracks
already heard and released in the UK.
'Rocket'
is the brand new single by British duo Goldfrapp. They consist of
Will Gregory and Alison Goldfrapp they have been releasing music
since as far back as 2000. This is the first track to be
taken from their forthcoming fifth studio album 'Head First'.
Their past two albums 'Seventh Tree' and 'Supernature' both made
no.2 so they will be hoping this goes one better. They have
enjoyed eleven top forty hits to date with the biggest being
2005's 'Ooh La La' which peaked at no.4. It comes released on a CD
format with new mixes featured being the Tiesto Remix, the Richard
X One Zero Remix, the Penguin Prison Remix and the Grum Remix.
There is always a great deal of interest in their new material so
I expect this to make inroads into the top ten next Sunday
afternoon.
'Morning
Sun' is the latest single by Robbie Williams and is the third to
be taken from his current album 'Reality Killed The Video Star'.
If successful it will become his thirty first UK top forty hit
which is no mean feat considering he has only just turned thirty
six years old. Although the album failed to make the top
spot, losing out to JLS, it sold almost a quarter of a million
copies in its first week thus confirming Williams ability to shift
sizeable quantities. His second greatest hits album is due
out at the end of this year and he has won more Brit Awards than
any other artist including the Outstanding Contribution to British
Music which he received this year. This is the official
anthem to this years Sport Relief fundraiser and comes released on
as a digitial download only, a surprising choice by the record
label considering it is for charity.
The
Christian's are back this week with a cover of the Yusuf Islam
track 'Where Do The Children Play' which was described by the
songwriter himself as being better than his own version. The
band originally consisted of three Christian brothers and Henry
Priestman but only Garry now remains with Russell having given up
touring and Roger Christian dying of a brain tumour in 1998.
It has been seventeen years since their last top forty hit with
'The Bottle' and an amazing twenty three years since their debut
hit 'Forgotten Town'. They managed nine top forty hits though only
their cover of the Isley Brothers 'Harvest For The World' graced
the top ten. It will be a long way back for the band now as
although the sound still retains Garry's soulful vocals they will
need to rebuild their fanbase from scratch. This is a neat
first step along the way though.
Former
East 17 frontman Brian Harvey releases his new single 'Going
Backwards' this week. As a solo artist he has notched up three top
thirty hits although his last appearance was nine years ago with
'Loving You (Ole Ole Ole)'. He was serious injured in 2005 when he
fell under the wheels of his Mercedes-Benz car but recovered
enough to record 'I Can' in 2007 which was put forward to
represent the UK in the Eurovision song contest. He was eliminated
while Scooch went on to win the competition although they scored
poorly in the overall contest. Now he is back with a new
single and a hope that he can revive his previously successful
career. It's not a bad song but whether he has the kind of
fanbase that can get him back in the top forty remains to be seen.
Unless he can mobilise serious airplay I can't see this appearing
on next weeks chart.
Thirty
year old American singer songwriter Norah Jones releases her new
single 'Stuck' this week. It is only available as a download
and it comes from her fourth studio album 'The Fall' which has
failed to live up to the sales of its predecessors following her
change to a rockier sound. In both the UK and US it became
her first album not to hit the top spot, and to date it has peaked
at no.24 in the UK though it did make the top three across the
water. The opening single from the album was 'Chasing
Pirates' but aside from a top ten appearance in Japan the track
went largely unnoticed. Despite her album sales successes she has
rarely touched the singles chart with only 'Sunrise' giving her a
top thirty hit back in 2004. As such I can't see this track
doing enough to provide her with another hit, but if it generates
some much needed airplay for her flagging album then it will have
been doing its job.
Also
released this week are 'Eyes Down' by Bonobo, 'Harold T
Wilkins' by Fanfarlo, 'Ever So Shy' by General Fiasco, 'Bleeding
Heart' by Jimi Hendrix, 'Logic' by Operator Please, 'Stick To
My Side' by Pantha Du Prince, 'Alcatraz' by Sound Of Guns and
'Peter Pan' by Teenagersintokyo. Download only releases include
'Happier' by A Fine Frenzy, 'Emily' by Absent Elk, 'Ganja' by
Dub Pistols featuring Rodney P, 'House On The Hill' by The
Funktuary, 'Baby' by Justin Bieber, 'Automatik' by Livvi Franc,
'My Name' by McLean, 'Stuck' by Norah Jones', 'Baby' by The
Phenomenal Handclap Band, 'I Put A Spell On You' by Shane
MacGowan & Friends and 'Disconnected' by Shy Child.
Following
Tiny Tempah's storming performance last weekend I think he will
end up holding on at the top with 'Pass Out'. Don't forget to stop
by next week when artists releasing new singles look set to
include Cheryl Cole, Craig David, Lady Gaga featuring Beyonce and
Paloma Faith. Until then have yourself a good week.
