The History of JHME
JHME has been available on the
Internet since 1996 but started as The Useful
Info Magazine which first appeared in 1986 on
Micronet, this was on a Videotex service called
Prestel which was based in the United Kingdom. We
also ran areas including an area on Clubspot.
The Useful Info Magazine was one
of the longest running magazines on Micronet, it
was available until the close of the Micronet
service. There were three or four other long
running areas on Micronet and most of these can
now be found on the World Wide Web although that
do NOT have any connection with Prestel or Micronet.
Prestel is still available but is
now no longer part of British Telecom, the New
Prestel is now also an service Provider on the
Internet.
Post Office Viewdata came into
being in the early 70s, this later became
known as Prestel. The idea behind Prestel was for
it to become a cheap mass information
service, very much the same as the internet
but on a smaller scale, however Prestel never did
become as popular as hoped, although it was very
popular with travel agents, money markets.
During the 80s when the home
computer market was really taking off a new
service became available which was called
MICRONET, this was an IP (Information
Provider) which leased space on the Prestel
Computers.
When Micronet started E-mail or
MAILBOX as it was known was not available,
however, this did later become part of the
service along with chatlines and Multi User
Games such as Shades.
